Many students from Hyderabad Central University and members of a Joint Action Committee for Rohith were escorted to Parliament Street police station and Tilak Marg police station and detained.
Among those detained was Dontha Prashant, Rohith’s friend and one of the students who was suspended with him. As police dragged participants into vans, members of the joint action committee formed a human chain around Rohith’s mother, Radhika, to ensure she was not harmed. The intended candlelight vigil turned into a protest outside Tilak Marg police station. Members of the joint action committee and Rohith’s family members raised slogans demanding justice for him.
After much sloganeering outside the police station, the members of the committee and other students were released. Prashant said, “A candle march is no offence. What is an offence are the lies that Smriti Irani has told in Parliament about there being a Dalit member on the panel that suspended us.” Raja Vemula, Rohith’s brother said, “We will not bow down to casteist forces. My brother’s death has woken many people up and we will continue our fight even if the state wants to keep detaining us for peaceful protests.”
