Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Collector slapped the National Security Act on Maoist leader Roopesh, his wife Shyna and three others – Kannan, Veeramani and Anoop – here on Saturday, rendering them ineligible to seek bail for a year. The NSA was slapped on the Maoists as per the recommendations made by the Q branch of the Tamil Nadu police. The arrested had filed separate bail pleas in the Magistrate Court over the last few days.
The imposing of NSA has come as a setback to the Maoist leaders who are currently lodged in the Coimbatore Central Jail. The five were arrested by the police in Karumathampatti in Coimbatore on May 4. The ultras were nabbed in a joint operation conducted by Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh police. An anti-Maoist squad, led by the Andhra Pradesh police, had detained them from a tea shop on Annoor road in Karumathampatti, 25 kilometers away from Coimbatore.
