Maoists kill tribal man ahead of ‘Protest Week’
Malkangiri (Odisha), Jul 2 (PTI) Maoists killed a tribal man suspecting him to be a police informer at Chintamchilika area here as the rebels began a ‘protest week’ today demanding halt to anti-Naxal operations by security forces. A group of ultras had abducted Raman Tamarabi (40) from Chintamchilika on Tuesday and his body was found in a nearby forest yesterday, police officials said. While the victim’s throat was slit, his body also had gunshot marks, they said, adding, that the ultras apparently suspected that Tamarabi was operating as an informer of the police.
The killing took place ahead of a ‘Pratibada Saptaha’ (protest week) called by the banned CPI (Maoist) demanding a halt to anti-Naxal operations by security forces. Vehicular movement was disrupted in Naxal-affected areas like Kalimela, Motu, Padia, MV-79 and Chitrakonda in the district as buses and other vehicles stopped plying fearing trouble, police officials said. As a precautionary measure, security personnel were deployed in vulnerable areas and borders with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have been sealed. Combing operation and patrolling were also intensified by security forces, police officials said.
Day one of Maoist ‘protest week’ peaceful
CHINTAPALLI (Visakhapatnam): With the Maoists kicking off their protest week, Border Security Force (BSF) inspector general PS Sandhu conducted an aerial survey of the border areas of Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh as well as Malkangiri area of Odisha on Wednesday. The IG reportedly guided the forces on combing operations and precautions to be taken in the Malkangiri area. According to sources, after the aerial survey Sandhu visited the cut-off area of Balimela reservoir, which is a Maoist stronghold, as BSF is playing the key role in anti-Maoist operations in Malkangiri district. Cops suspect that the naxals warned the traders of various areas against attending the weekly markets (shandies) during the protest week.
Nearly three to four shandies are held at various places in the Visakha Agency daily. Sources in the police department said naxals put up banners at Busiputtu area in Munchingput mandal and cops observed some suspicious movement of unidentified persons at Kumkumpudi village in GK Veedhi mandal on Tuesday. Some movement of naxals in small groups was also noticed at the interiors in the Agency area, sources said. Cops suspect that the Maoists may strike at any place to show their presence in the Agency during the protest week.
