KOCHI: Anoop George, who was arrested along with Maoist leaders Roopesh and Shyna in Coimbatore recently, was on Monday produced before the Ernakulam District Principal Sessions Court, in connection with the attack on the corporate office of Nitta Gelatine at Panampilly Nagar. Anoop was sent to police custody for 10 days by the court. Anoop was brought from Coimbatore Central Jail to Kochi by road, escorted by armed policemen. He was produced before the court around 11:00 am. At the court, he shouted slogan supporting the Kathikudam protesters.
A platoon of policemen were deployed at the court complex to ensure security. District Principal Sessions Court judge S Jagadees permitted the presence of advocate Vincent Joseph during the interrogation of the accused, to be conducted between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm everyday, while in police custody. The court ordered that the accused be not subjected to any physical or mental torture. The involvement of Anoop, a native of Kumplampoika in Pathanamthitta, in the Nitta Gelatin attack was established from the confession statement of Ramanan, the Maoist activist who was arrested in connection with a case. As per Sashthamangalam-native Ramanan, he and Anoop were part of the nine-member gang that attacked the Nitta Gelatin office on November 10, 2014. On the basis of the confession, Ramanan was arraigned as the third accused in the case, and Anoop was arraigned as the fourth accused. Ramanan, who was arrested by the SIT on May 29, is currently under judicial custody. Anoop was secretary of the SFI Ranni area committee in 2006. He was a student leader at the Vechoochira Government Polytechnic.
